Description
These stunning hand carved seedling dibblers are perfect for preparing your garden bed when transplanting seedlings.
It is medium-to-large in size which means that is is suitable for most vegetable seedlings as well as for planting seeds.
Danni from the Zero Waste Store family turns them into shape using a pole lathe and razor sharp chisels. The pole-lathe doesn’t even use electricity! A bow with string is pushed by hand which rotates the lathe spindle so that the chisel can work away at the wood.
Once the pole-lathe shape turning is completed the black lines are burned into the dibbler. Once again this is done by human-power, spinning the lathe while pulling a frictionally-heated wire into the dibbler.
The logo is burned into the dibbler, so no plastic paint is used and finally a coat of oil is applied.
The hardwood is from eucalyptus trees and much care is taken to minimise any damage to the forest during harvesting. Only naturally fallen non-habitat tree parts are used.
Note that these dibblers are manufactured in a freehand method. No two are the same. Each dibbler varies in size, shape and colour. The grain and other features of the wood help to determine what shape dibbler is created.
Usage:
For planting seeds; after the soil is prepared, find a guide to the right depth to plant your seed. You may be able to find it on the packet or online. Alternatively you can use the three times the size of the seed rule-of-thumb. Use the dibbler in a dragging motion to create a small trench, then sprinkle the seeds into the trench and then cover the trench back in.
For planting seedlings; prepare the soil and the seedling, paying attention to open any bound-up roots. Push the dibbler down into the soil bed to the desired depth, as gauged by placing the seedling alongside the black rings on the dibbler. The dibbler can be used to widen a hole by working the dibbler in a circular motion. Plant the seedling and then firm the soil in around the base of the seedling.
Black lines around the dibbler are provided as a gauge. By offering the seedling up alongside the dibbler, the corresponding depth ring on the dibbler can be selected. That same depth ring on the dibbler can then be used as a guide to create the perfect hole depth in your new garden bed for each seedling.
Care & Maintenance:
To show your dibbler some love, wash it with a brush and a little warm soapy water. Then dry the dibbler and reapply some oil. Leave the oil to soak in for a few hours. Most plant or nut oils are fine and whatever you have on hand will do.
